JCB has developed and supplied an excavator with ultra-low ground bearing pressure to meet the specific site requirements of a leading Scottish construction firm.

Malcolm Construction, part of The Malcolm Group, needed a powerful tracked machine which could perform in the wet and soft ground conditions found in certain landfill and construction applications. JCB worked in conjunction with the customer and local dealer, Scot JCB, to deliver a JS145 model with a longer track frame and 1,500mm wide track pads, that provide a truly ultra-low pressure platform from which to work.

Malcolm Construction operates a fleet of over 200 machines, approximately half of which is made up of JCB’s backhoe loader, Loadall telescopic handler, excavator and wheeled loading shovel models. The new 1,500mm tracked JS145 model replaces two existing JCB JS145 excavators which were fitted with the widest available standard track pads (900mm).

Operations and Environment Manager at The Malcolm Group, David Balmer said: "We have decided to replace two standard low ground pressure machines with this new extra wide option. Those machines were very hard worked, so it was worth investing to get a new machine that is right for our needs. Now that the purpose-built JS145 is on site, it’s doing the job that we had hoped it would."
John McManus, Malcolm Construction’s Plant Workshop Manager who deals with Scot JCB on a daily basis, said: "We have our own in-house mechanics but we work closely with Scot JCB, in fact that’s one of the main reasons that we buy from JCB. It’s because the back-up is second to none, far better than from any other suppliers. Scot JCB offers us a first class service."

Powered by a high performance, 70kW (94hp) Tier III-compliant Isuzu engine which delivers a series of performance, economical and environmental benefits, the JCB JS145 offers maximum efficiency along with low noise levels and emissions. The key features of the machine are its operator comfort levels, excellent serviceability, ground level daily servicing and an intelligent Advanced Management System.
