SDC Trailers, Europe’s leading manufacturer of trailers, based in Toomebridge has continued its successful 2014 with the announcement of a contract worth £3 million over the next two years. The contract, with Scotland’s largest haulage company, the Malcolm Group is for 120 trailers and includes a joint development project to design an extending trailer which can transport additional pallets on the same lorry. The 15.6m Extending Length Skeletal Trailer can transport 40’,45’and 50’ containers, the latter being able to carry eight additional pallets over conventional 45’ units on the same lorry providing increased productivity and fuel economy, and is 5ft longer than standard skeletal trailer.

Managing Director Mark Cuskeran says the company is delighted both with the success of the new product, and also with securing such a large order so soon after announcing its £10 Million contract with Hireco, just a few months month ago. He added that the company expects to make another significant announcement in the coming months, securing current levels of employment and possibly adding further jobs before the end of 2014.

“The new Extended Length Skeletal Trailer, which was designed and developed by Malcolm Group & SDC is the very first of its kind in the UK, and was built under the UK’s 2012 longer semi-trailer trial. The extra capacity offers reduced fuel usage and carbon emissions while increasing productivity, and has undergone stringent testing and safety approval for both road & rail use. Again we see how SDC has been able to secure significant orders, through the quality of our products, our constant innovation, and keeping our manufacturing costs as low as possible.”

SDC’s highly skilled design engineers strive to develop a solution to meet the needs of their customer’s logistical requirements. This is the latest of a long line of innovations from the forward-thinking trailer manufacturer.

In May this year SDC announced an order worth £10 million from trailer rental company Hireco Ltd. The trailers, which include a range of box vans, double-deck step-frame curtainsiders, and urban trailers, are manufactured across SDC's three state of the art engineering facilities at Toomebridge, Antrim and Mansfield.

The major order indicated positive growth in the UK’s transport and logistics markets with six hundred new trailers being added to the Hireco fleet. In the last 12 months, SDC Trailers has created a total of 170 jobs, with hopes of more to follow before the end of the year. The group turnover to 31/3/2014 was £130m, projected to rise to £150m by 31/3/15, a rise of £20 million.

SDC Trailers have been serving the road transport and logistics industry since 1978. Having pioneered a number of innovative design features and operational advancements, they are now widely recognised as the industry leader.
